Partial Dentures - Acrylic Partial Dentures

Partial dentures are used when you still have some natural teeth remaining.  This type of denture will fill the gaps in your dentition, restoring aesthetics and your ability to chew.  Your denturist will be able to decide what type of partial denture is right for you based on your specific needs.

Acrylic partial dentures

Acrylic partials dentures are built on an acrylic foundation and may have metal clasps that are used to anchor on to remaining natural teeth.  An acrylic partial denture is usually more affordable than a "cast partial denture", because it is made of plastic and does not have a metal framework.  However, it may also be more bulky and heavier,  and is only suitable in certain circumstances.  The metal clasps are made from wrought wire which provides both flexibility for adaptation to natural teeth and rigidity to keep the partial denture in place during chewing and during speech. Its flexibility is a tradeoff between the thickness of the wire and aesthetics. A thicker wire would provide better anchorage but may be more uncomfortable for the denture wearer. This is why the clasps in an acrylic particle denture can easily be bent out of place if not inserted and removed from the mouth correctly or not stored appropriately. Your denturist can help explain whether and acrylic partial denture is an option for you.
